6-72. PLANETARY SPEED REDUCER-Continued
(17)
Turn primary carrier assembly upside down so that spline end of carrier is upward. Insert spline end
of sun gear (20) into spline end of primary carrier assembly and push in until spline is completely
engaged.
(18)
Invert primary carrier assembly (sun gear down). Install primary carrier assembly into secondary
carrier assembly until sun gear (20) meshes with secondary planet gears (30A). Primary carrier
assembly will drop down to where primary planet gears (23) touch top of ring gear teeth (8). Hold
inside diameter of carrier (7) and rotate until planet gears line up with ring gear teeth; assembly will
drop into place.
(19)
Put one thrust washer (17), thrust bearing (18), and another thrust washer (17) over step of input
gear (16).
(20)
Insert input gear (16) into primary planet assembly so teeth mesh with primary planet gears (23).
NOTE
A simple planetary such as this one does not require a "timing" procedure.
(21)
Fill unit with 4.5 pints of gear oil (Item 45, Appendix E). Correct oil level will measure to middle of
primary planet gears (23).
(22)
Lubricate new O-ring (6) and stretch over pilot of cover (5).
(23)
Invert cover (5) and set on top of unit. Rotate cover until oil fill hole is in proper orientation with
grease fitting in case. Install eight cover bolts (3) with lockwashers (4) and tighten to 32 ft lb (43
Nm). Put pipe sealant (Item 2, Appendix E) on fill plug (1) and install into oil fill hole in cover.
(24)
Stick a shaft into the input gear (6) and rotate by hand to be sure unit runs smoothly and easily.
h. Follow-on Maintenance.
(1)
Install planetary speed reducer (see para 5-53).
(2)
Connect batteries (see para 4-114).
