6-6. FIRE PUMP - Continued
(11)
The driven shaft (67) assembly was factory shimmed to limit the axial float. If any of the parts
have been changed, it may be necessary to change the total thickness of shims (48) between the
cap (42) and oil pump support housing (47). The correct thickness of shims can be determined as
follows:
a. Apply axial force to end of the driven shaft (67) so it is moved forward against housing (71) as far
as it can go. Install oil pump support housing (47), less shims (48), until the nose end of the
housing (47) contacts the outer driven shaft bearing (73). Measure clearance between oil pump
support housing (47) and the face of the cap (42) and add to this measurement .005 to .01 0 in. (.1
27-.254 mm) and this total is the thickness of shims to install between oil pump support housing
(47) and cap (42). Remove the housing (50) and install the shims (48) and fasten the housing (47)
to the cap (42) with cap screws (49) and lockwashers (44).
NOTE
Shims are color coded for thickness as follows: .005" (.127 mm)
blue, .010" (.254 mm) brown.
(12)
Place this assembly aside for later installation.
(13)
Press needle bearings (80 and 81) into each end of bore of drive sprocket (24) (see note below),
setting them back from each face 1/8 in. (3.2 mm). Slide sprocket (24), coupling teeth end first,
onto drive shaft (34).
NOTE
One end of the O. D. of the cup of the needle bearings (80 and
81) has a shiny surface and the remaining surface has a dull
appearance. These bearings should be in- stalled in the bore of
the drive sprocket (24) shiny end first.
(14)
Press spacer (98) and bearing (92) on shaft against shoulder of drive sprocket (24). (Drive
sprocket (24) should rotate freely on shaft after installation of the bearing.)
(15)
Install snap ring (97) and spacer (96).
(16)
Press tachometer gear (94) and sleeve (95) on shaft against shoulder spacer (96). Press pilot
bearing (90) on other end of shaft.
(17)
Press new oil seal (93) into drive shaft housing (11). Make sure tachometer drive bushing (30) is in
place in the housing (11).
(18)
Apply a light coat of sealant (Item 35, Appendix E) to face of drive shaft housing (11). Position new
gasket (33) in place on the housing (11).
(19)
Install the drive shaft housing (11) on the bearing (92) on the drive shaft assembly.
(20)
Place this assembly aside for later installation.
