Place shaft and sprocket assembly in an arbor press in a vertical position with the spline end up
and supported on the bottom face of sprocket (24). Press shaft out of bearing (92). Catch shaft to
avoid damage.

Remove needle bearings (80 and 81) from sprocket (24).
(35)
Remove two screws (99) and washers (100) securing coverplate (101) and gasket (102) to
midsection (15). Discard gasket.
(36)
Remove adjusting screw (103) and screw retainer (104) from midsection (15).
(37)
Remove breather (105), magnetic drain plug (106), sight plug (107) and pipe plug (108).

Inspection of Transmission.
(1) Refer to general instructions concerning inspection of bearings and their cleaning; in addition, check for
the following:
(1)
Bent shift shaft (37).
(2)
Worn shifter shoes (38).
(3)
Loose shifter pivot pins (40).
(4)
Damaged locking arm assembly (52), sector gear (57), or bent pivot pin (61).
(5)
Condition of oil hoses.
(6)
Damaged splines on drive (34) and coupling (32) shafts.
(7)
Worn or damaged drive slot in end of driven shaft (67).
(8)
Oil seals, if not discarded.,
(9)
Worn oil pump (45).
(10)
Worn sprocket teeth (24 and 26).
(11)
Worn flanks on inner chain (21) links.
(12)
Outside guide links of chain (21) not retained by "riveted over" pins.
(13)
Wear on inner faces of outside guide links of chain (21).
(14)
Badly worn pointing on teeth of shift collar (35), and similar wear on teeth of drive shaft (34)
and coupling shaft (32).
(15)
Worn or damaged oil seal sleeves (88 and 95).
(16)
Damaged or dirty sump oil strainer (7).
(17)
If oil pump (45) does not operate properly or shows signs of damage, it must be replaced.
Check to make sure pump turns freely and drive tang is not damaged. If in doubt, contact
factory for instructions.
(2)
Before assembly, make sure all reusable parts have been cleaned and are kept free of dirt during
reassembly.
