6-6. FIRE PUMP - Continued
(17) Insert packing rings into the stuffing box using packing glands to push in each ring. (A pair of
screw drivers may assist in prying the glands in and out of the stuffing box.) Observe the order of
packing ring insertion for Flexible Graphite packing sets shown. The scarf cuts (or slits in Flexible
Graphite packing) should be staggered 900 to prevent a direct leakage path.
WARNING
The engine should be shut down (and the drive shaft not rotating) whenever
manipulating the packing adjustment nuts or determining packing gland
temperature.
(18) Tighten adjustment nuts one flat beyond finger tight.
(19) Operate the pump (para 20 through 23) in volume (parallel) with a discharge pressure from 75 to
150 psi (517 to 1034 kPa). Circulate enough flow through the pump to prevent overheating.
