WARNING
Rotating Drive Shaft: Packing, gland nut manipulation, direct observation of the
stuffing box and installing or removing rings from the stuffing box should be
performed with the fire truck engine off and the drive shaft not rotating.
Determine packing gland leakage by watching the ground (or pan under the
stuffing boxes)from the side of the truck. Determine packing gland temperature
immediately after the engine has been shut off.
(8) Remove packing gland adjustment nuts, washers, and packing glands from the stuffing box.
(9) Operate pump at a discharge pressure of 75 to 150 psi (517 to 1034 kPa) for approximately ten
seconds.
(10) Shut down pump and remove blown packing from stuffing box. Repeat if necessary.
