ENGINE DIVISION SERVICE MANUAL TM 5-4210-230-14&P-1 Listed here are only those causes for the indicated problem conditions which are chargeable to the ignition system. CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSE REMEDY Engine fails to start No primary voltage to Check battery, ignition coil. switch, primary feed and ground circuits.(Perform "Primary Voltage Drop Test"). Repair as needed. (Perform "Ignition System Trouble Shooting Test") Moisture in distributor Clean and dry parts.  Cor- cap or high tension cable rect cause for entry of boots. moisture. Trigger wheel-to-sensor Check air gap.  Adjust if air gap incorrect. needed. Open rotor. Replace rotor. Faulty distributor cap. Replace cap. Coil high tension cable Check cable installation. not seated in coil tower or distributor cap. Faulty high tension Replace cables. cables. Coil open or shorted. Test coil, replace if faulty. Faulty electronic control Replace control unit. unit. Engine backfires but Incorrect ignition timing. Check timing.  Adjust as fails to start. needed. Moisture in distributor Dry cap and rotor. cap. Distributor cap faulty or Check cap for loose ter- carbon tracked. minals, cracks and dirt. Clean or replace as needed. Spark plug cables con- Check cables for correct nected incorrectly. position. Engine does not operate Spark plugs fouled. Clean and regap plugs. smoothly or engine misfires at high speed Spark plug electrodes Regap or replace plugs. worn (gap too wide). Spark plug cables faulty. Check cables, replace if needed. Spark advance system(s) Check operation of advance faulty. system(s). Repair as needed. Worn distributor shaft Check for worn bushings. bushings. Rebuild or replace distributor. Excessive fuel See causes listed under consumption. "engine does not operate smoothly."
