4-144. FLEXIBLE COUPLING REPLACEMENT
This task covers:

General Safety Instructions
Mallet
Engine OFF.
Transmission in (N) neutral.
Materials/Parts
Parking brake and micro-brakelock set.
Coupling (7831571)
REMOVAL
a.
Remove the coupling to flange bolt nuts and
washers (1).
b.
Remove the clamp bolt (2).
c.
Remove the steering gear frame bolts.
d.
Lower the steering gear far enough to
remove the flexible coupling.
e.
Remove the flexible coupling from the
d.
Place the steering gear into position, guiding
steering gear wormshaft by tapping lightly
the flexible coupling bolts into the proper
with a soft mallet.

INSTALLATION
e.
Install the steering gear and frame bolts and
torque to 75 ft-lbs (102 N-m).

Install flexible coupling onto the steering
gear wormshaft, align the flat on the shaft

The coupling alignment pins should
be centered in the flange slots.

Push the coupling onto the wormshaft until
the coupling reinforcement bottoms against

Install the coupling to flange bolt (2), nuts,
the end of the worm.
and washers (1) and torque nuts to 20 ft-lbs
(27 N-m).
c.
Clamp bolt (2) into the split clamp and
torque to 31 ft-lbs (42 N-m).
g.
Measure the coupling to flange dimension
and maintain a 0.250 to 0.375 inch (6.4 to
NOTE
9.5 mm) dimension.
The bolt must pass through the
shaft undercut.
