Replace/polish as required, (see para. 4-25). 10j  STEERING WHEEL HAS EXCESSIVE BACKLASH Step 1.  Check steering shaft universal joints for wear. Replace universal joints, (see para. 4-25). Step 2.  Check backlash in miter box. Replace miter box, (see para. 4-25). Step 3.  Check for loose steering shaft or worn splines. Replace steering shaft, (see para. 4-25). Step 4.  Check pitman arm and steering axle balls. Replace pitman arm or axle balls, (see para. 4-25). Step 5.  Check adjustment of drag link. Adjust as required, (see para. 4-25). Step 6.  Check tightness of steering column, miter box and steering gear mounting hardware. Tighten. Step 7.  Check steering gear. Repair steering gear, (see para. 4-25). 10k  WHEELS WILL NOT ATTEMPT TO RETURN TO STRAIGHT AHEAD POSITION FROM TURNS Step 1.  Check steering column and steering shafts for binding. Replace column or universal joints, (see para. 4-25). Step 2.  Check mounting of steering gear. Tighten mounting hardware. Step 3.  Check drag link ends for seizing. Regrease or adjust drag link ends. 4-47
