TM 5-4210-220-12 2-10.  OPERATING THE VEHICLE. a Starting the Engine (1) Set battery switch (1) to BOTH. (2)    Be sure that the parking brakes are engaged, i e, the brake control button (2) is pulled OUT. (3) Be sure that the transmission shift lever (3) is in N (neutral) position.  The transmission neutral start switch prevents starting unless the transmission is in neutral. NOTE Prime the engine fuel system if the engine falls to start.  Depress the prime button (4) for 10 to 20 seconds If  the  engine  falls  to  start  after  priming  and  several  starting  attempts,  consult  the  troubleshooting  chart  in  Chapter  3, Section II. (4) Turn the ignition switch (5) to ON. (5) Depress the start button (6) until the engine starts or a maximum of 30 seconds.  If the engine falls to start, wait  one  to  two  minutes  and  repeat  the  starting  attempt.    Waiting  between  starting  attempts  is  necessary  to  prevent overheating of the starter motor. 2-45
